Did you know you can flip your triads around to play them where your hand is more comfortable? Here is a G Major triad and it's first and second inversions. Incorporating these inversions makes it easier to jump to different notes!

Ever hear a song that has the same vibe all the way through? Dynamics, or how loud and soft we play, add depth to the whole song. You can practice dynamics by tapping soft and periodically adding some more firm hits. Your instrument is your canvas! 🎨

Drumsticks come in a bunch of different shapes and sizes! I use 5A for my comfort since they're thin and light, but if you have a tendency to break sticks maybe consider going up a size!

A fun exercise I like to use is taking the shape of a major chord and playing the notes individually. It’s important to move slowly and really let the notes you’re playing sink in.

How do you grip your pick? It may feel natural to hold it with your index and middle fingers, especially for strumming. For alternate picking, aka individually plucking strings in an up-down pattern, you should instead place your pick on your curled index finger and grip down with your thumb. This creates a more clear sound and prevents the pick from sliding around in your hand. If you’re like me you’ll drop your pick less 🤪

I'm so in love with my new guitar! It's a Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster. If you're not familiar, the 🐐 was left handed, but, rather than play on a lefty guitar, he would flip a right handed guitar upside down and string it the opposite way. This is very much a right handed guitar, but you might notice the head is upside down in the iconic style of Jimi. What should I name it?

The circle of fifths is a fun tool to help you understand music theory better. It's a series of 12 notes or chords where each notes is 5 notes away from the last. If you play it through you'll eventually land on the first note that you started with, hence the name "circle" of fifths.

The G major scale is the next in the circle of fifths after the basic C scale. Each scale after the last starting from the C scale adds another sharp note. If we use the major scale formula you’ll notice the seventh note is an F#. Knowing this helps to figure out key signatures on music staffs!

Have you ever heard the phrase “key signature”? This is what determines the root note of the scale you’re playing in. A single flat symbol at the beginning of a staff indicates there is only one flat note in the scale. The scale with one flat note is the F Major scale, so when we see that single flat note we know we’re playing in the key of F.

I love adding new layers to the mix! If you think it's time to add some mystery and flare to your jam then you have to try out this chord. Here you'll see me playing the Em11 chord, and don't worry, it's way easier to play than it looks!

We learned about the "minor-minor" or "Diminished" chord. Here is its optimistic cousin, the "Augmented" or "major-major" chord. This means that, starting from the root note, each note after is two whole steps from the last. In the first example, you'll see a G maj chord. In the second you'll notice that I've changed the D note to a D#. This is the G aug chord!

Have you ever seen a diminished chord being called for and had no idea what that meant? A diminished chord is a "minor-minor" chord. This means that, from the root note, each note after is a step and a half away from the last. In the first example you see an Em made up of E, F, and B. The second example is an Edim chord made up of E, F, and Bb.

That fun little riff in Elephant by Tame Impala is a lot easier than it sounds! I’m playing a power chord on the 5th fret and slide it around from there. I played 5, 6, 5, 4, 5, 4, 3 and then a high F# before bringing it back to the original 5th fret power chord. Happy jamming 🤩

Have you ever popped a string on stage? Here are less common gig bag essentials that I keep on me at all times. The high E string is the most common to pop so I keep a .11 gauge string with me as well as a string winder and tuner to make the process quick and easy.
