Not only did they provide sexual intercourse/desire, but they offered intellectual companionship and stimulation as well. These were highly educated women. They sold sex through the “language” of gift exchange. Often times they would accompany male party goers at Greek Symposiums. One of the most infamous Hetaera was nick named “Phyrne”. One legend has it that she was charged of Impiety. Her defenders had stripped her clothes off in front of the jurisdiction in which they had decided to acquit her of her crime. Other stories say that she had cried in front and shook each member of the jury’s hand in which she was acquitted. My thoughts: wow! Sex work can be at a higher caliber than we think. I like to think of my mission here as a honorable representation of all misrepresented ancestors that came before us😊
