I wanted to share one of my favorite stories about acceptance and the importance of understanding our gay history, and how far back it actually goes. Queer writer Andrew Ramer recounts how one day when he was a teenager he and his father went to an exhibit of cave paintings. At one point his father turned to him and asked who he thought created the paintings. Andrew shrugged and said he didn’t know. His father looked at him and said, “It had to be the gay guys in the tribe.” Andrew looked at his father surprised and then listened as his father explained. “While all the other men are out hunting and killing, there’s a bunch of gay guys sitting in the back of the cave, complaining about how ugly it is, and wondering what they can do to make it look better. So they decided to paint pictures on the walls.”
Andrew talks about how he never forgot that conversation with his father. He realized that his father was consciously trying to say to him, “I want you to understand that you have roots, that you have history.”
